The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI Tommi Mäkinen Edition — often called the Evo 6.5 TME — is one of the most legendary versions of the Evo lineup. Released in 2000 by Mitsubishi Motors, it was built to celebrate rally driver Tommi Mäkinen and his four consecutive World Rally Championship titles with Mitsubishi.
🏁 Why It’s Special
The TME wasn’t just a cosmetic package — it featured meaningful performance and chassis upgrades inspired by Mitsubishi’s success in the World Rally Championship.
🔧 Performance Upgrades
-
2.0L turbocharged 4G63 engine (officially 276 hp, often underrated)
-
Quicker-spooling titanium turbocharger
-
Revised engine mapping for sharper throttle response
-
Lowered ride height compared to the standard Evo VI
-
Retuned suspension for improved cornering
-
Quicker steering rack (more responsive turn-in)
The result is a more agile, sharper-feeling car compared to the regular Evo VI.
🎨 Visual Differences
The Tommi Mäkinen Edition has several unique styling cues:
-
Special front bumper with a more aggressive design
-
Unique 17-inch Enkei wheels
-
Red-painted brake calipers
-
Optional factory rally graphics
-
“Tommi Mäkinen Edition” badging
It was most famously offered in Passion Red, though other colors like white, silver, and black were available.
🚗 Driving Experience
The TME feels more raw and responsive than the standard Evo VI:
-
Faster steering response
-
Stronger mid-range boost
-
Tighter body control in corners
-
Classic turbo surge feel
It’s a car that feels directly connected to Mitsubishi’s rally dominance of the late 1990s and early 2000s.
