Introduced in 1969, the Triumph TR6 marked the final evolution of the traditional body-on-frame Triumph TR lineage. Styled by German coachbuilder Karmann and produced by Triumph Motor Company, the TR6 combined muscular British roadster character with improved performance and everyday usability.
The PI (Petrol Injection) version represents the most desirable and powerful specification of the model a true driver-focused sports car from the golden era of classic British motoring.
Design & Character
The TR6 retained the separate chassis architecture of its predecessor but adopted a sharper, more angular body design. Its squared-off rear end, purposeful front grille, and wide stance gave it a more aggressive and modern appearance compared to the earlier TR4 and TR5.
True to tradition, the TR6 is a pure two-seat convertible with a manually operated soft top. The interior is simple yet charismatic, featuring a wood-veneer dashboard, clear Smiths instrumentation, and supportive bucket seats an authentic 1960s sports car environment.
Performance & Engineering
The 1969 TR6 PI is powered by a 2.5-liter inline six-cylinder engine equipped with Lucas mechanical fuel injection a key distinction from the carbureted versions sold in other markets.
-
Engine: 2.5L straight-six
-
Fuel system: Lucas mechanical petrol injection
-
Power output: Approx. 150 hp (European specification)
-
Transmission: 4-speed manual with optional overdrive
-
Drive layout: Front-engine, rear-wheel drive
The overdrive system, operating on the upper gears, effectively provides a higher cruising ratio, reducing engine revs at speed and improving long-distance comfort while maintaining lively acceleration when disengaged.
With strong torque delivery, responsive steering, and a raw mechanical soundtrack, the TR6 PI delivers an engaging and distinctly analog driving experience. Its independent rear suspension (introduced on the TR4A) enhances road holding compared to earlier solid-axle Triumphs.
Driving Experience
The TR6 PI is not about refinement it is about connection. The direct steering, firm clutch, and energetic straight-six engine make every drive an event. It is equally suited to spirited country-road driving and relaxed touring with the overdrive engaged.
Heritage & Collectibility
Produced between 1969 and 1976, the TR6 was one of Triumph’s greatest commercial successes, particularly in export markets. The early PI versions, with their higher power output and European specification, are especially sought after today.
The 1969 Triumph TR6 PI Overdrive embodies the essence of classic British open-top motoring: mechanical simplicity, strong performance, and timeless roadster appeal.
